SIA Recognized for Accomplishments in the Ocean City Sentinel!
At our July, 2022 meeting, Valerie Dall Acqua presented a power point on the detriments of light pollution and the benefits to humans and wildlife of darkening skies. This is one of the outcomes of our focus group initiatives and is being discussed at the Township level as well. To view the powerpoint, click on the box below.

Interpretive Signs at Corson's Inlet State Park in Recognition of the SIA's 70th Anniversary
Just up the path at the Corson's Inlet State Park on Commonwealth Avenue, you'll come upon two interpretive signs about our rich birdlife. Did you know Strathmere is an important stop along the Atlantic Flyway? During migration periods, birds stop to rest, nest, and refuel for their long flights.
The signs are a gift to Corson's Inlet in celebration of Linda Carter Bateman's milestone birthday and the SIA's 70th Anniversary. The Carter Family's donation in Linda's name, along with financial support from the SIA, is designed to build appreciation for and understanding of our natural area.
Chris Baeckstom gave an informative presentation at the Schiavo Library on August 31 on the best ways to attract pollinators to your garden, where to purchase native plants, and listed multiple resources to guide you as you plant your own garden. Chris presented photos of established gardens around town that have successfully attracted bees and butterflies and the variety of native plants used. With the help of gardeners Chris Baeckstrom, David Cummings, Rose Rhine, and Marian Rossi, the Schiavo Library is the first of many community gardens planned and it is already thriving! You can find Chris Baeckstrom's slideshow below.
Dark Skies
The SIA is in the news! On January 3, 2024, Craig Schenck from the Ocean City Sentinel featured the SIA and our many accomplishments throughout 2023, and our goals for 2024
